Time Machine: Track Screenshot History
See how the world's top apps evolve their app store presence over time — and what you can learn from it.
What the Time Machine does
The Time Machine is a Pro feature in AppScreens that records and stores every version of an app's screenshots as they change in the App Store and Google Play. When an app updates its listing, AppScreens captures the new screenshots and preserves the old ones, creating a visual timeline of the app's store presence.
Why screenshot history matters
App store listings are not static. Top apps frequently update their screenshots for several reasons:
- A/B testing results — apps often run store listing experiments and roll out winning variants, which show up as screenshot changes.
- Seasonal campaigns — holiday themes, event promotions, and seasonal feature highlights drive periodic updates.
- Feature launches — major product updates are typically accompanied by new screenshots that highlight the new functionality.
- Rebranding — visual identity changes (new colors, typography, illustration style) appear in screenshot updates.
- Competitive response — when a category leader changes strategy, competitors often follow within weeks.
How to use the Time Machine
Navigate to any app's detail page on AppScreens. If you're on the Pro plan, you'll see a timeline showing every tracked version. Click any version to view its screenshots. Use the Compare button to view two versions side by side, making it easy to spot exactly what changed between updates.
Examples of what you can discover
- How Uber simplified its screenshots from feature-heavy layouts to clean, caption-driven designs over multiple iterations.
- When TikTok shifted from showcasing creator content to highlighting platform features in its store listing.
- How Airbnb adapts its screenshots seasonally, with summer travel imagery giving way to cozy winter stays.
Getting started
The Time Machine is available to all Pro plan subscribers. Free users can see the latest screenshots for any app, but historical versions require Pro access.
